Introduction
I travel a lot. I surf the web even more. Over the last three years I’ve spent time in thirteen countries and three continents making airports and hotel rooms more of a constant, for me, than home. I also spend more hours, each day, online than most people would consider to be healthy. The one stability in all this is Google+ where I can be found, time allowing, on most days. It has become my anchor.

In my posts, interviews and podcasts I add pieces to the puzzle. I explain how each one fits in a bigger picture. How that bigger picture then makes sense.

Sensemaking changes everything.

Before I got here, I used to be a corporate rat who used to be a journalist, before I jumped ship into full-time writing, speaking and blogging.
In my offline time I indulge a lifelong passion in martial arts, I run, hit the heavy bag and try to find the limits at which we can go without sleep and still function. I also visit as many museums and cafes as possible. Funnily enough I regard what can be found in both museums and cafes as brain food.

Fitness is important to me. It helps maintain a level of sanity that would otherwise require pharmaceuticals or expensive therapy. I pay some of what it has given me back by running  a Fitness Community. I am also a moderator of Plus Your Business a community focused on helping business people get the most out of G+ and the semantic web.

Speaking of semantics, I am the owner of Google Semantic Search a community I started to explore the implications of semantic technology in daily life (and there are many).

Professionally I advise a handful of companies globally, blog for a number of websites, including Forbes, journalism.co.uk, and socialmediatoday and write for magazines and newspapers.

I give about 50 talks, speeches and presentations each year and hold an annual seminar on SEO and Social Media (details to which you will find on my website.). I advise a couple  of global companies and a handful of startups on social media positioning and search strategies and I write for Forbes, 21CIT, Insights and a number of dead-tree newspapers.

Dennis N. Duce Hangout On Air Guest Embrace The Power of the Magic Lantern

This week I am joined by an all star panel to discuss how the power of video, specifically hangouts, can help us tell stories and build relationships.  

 

+DENNIS N. DUCE :

The Duce, the dude who wears a different hat every day.  Dennis produces hangouts for a living. His job is to help businesses engage with their community in a way that’s unique to them and personal to their audience. 
If we go back a few years (OK, quite a few years), stories were told in painted or carved pictures on walls. It was through these pictures that we communicated with others and told our stories.  One could even argue that it was a language. 

The first animated picture was in the 1650’s using a machine called the magic lantern which was kind of like a slide projector. This concept was kicked up in 1867 by William Lincoln who invented the “wheel of life” which allowed people to watch moving pictures or drawings, kind of like the viewmaster toy. 

In 1891, Thomas Edison created the first camera with the ability to capture motion on film. He called it the Kinetoscope.

The last 125 years has seen numerous advancements including TV in 1951, to the consumer based video camera. Both of these technologies were the beginning of the amazing technology we have today. 

We now carry HD cameras that can stream live in our pockets. Think about that, we carry around the ability to broadcast live to millions of people in our pockets, something only large media companies could do. 

Not only that, when we pair up these cameras with Hangouts, it gives us the ability to create a two-way broadcast, something the big boys struggle with doing. In fact, they often use the same technology us peasants do when they need to have two way communication. 

This technology, which is virtually free, allows us to tell stories in ways that are only limited by our creativity.  We can meet “face to face” with total strangers on the other side of the world and in a short time feel like we’ve known them forever. 

This Friday, we will dive into telling stories  and building relationships with Delilah, Scott and Dennis.  We’ll also touch on something that we don’t think about, but we all do, and what makes video an extremely powerful medium; motor mimicry.

I know there is always a lot of talk about the new direction of Google Search and how Semantics play into those changes. Sandra and I will be talking about Semantic Search with The Semantic Search Thought Leader David Amerland!

I have always been interested in bicycles.  I remember tearing apart bikes and fixing bikes with my dad.  I will never forget the first time we changed a tube and he taught me how to patch the hole with a Rema patch kit.  I must have been about 8 years old.  Ever since I have been intrigued by anything to do with bicycles.  After bouncing around in the corporate world for awhile I decided to do what makes me the most happy (not the most money) spending time with my family and being around bikes.
